A cold new year
My new year began in Scotland in the Cairngorms. The weather was cold, cloudless and dry and there was a hoar frost everywhere. People were skating on the lochs after a prolonged spell of approx -14 degrees C. It was perfect, I felt good to be there, energized and healthy. And yet, today I learnt about the tragic death of Rob Gauntlett, who died whilst ice climbing in the French alps yesterday. It was a cold reminder about how dangerous the mountains can be. In 2006 Rob was the youngest Briton to summit Mount Everest. I met Rob in 2007 as he was about to embark on his pole to pole expedition. I was chilled to the core to hear this news and I send all my sympathy to Rob’s friends and family.
