Rural education

People often ask where my love of adventure and the outdoors comes from. In part it comes from growing up on a farm in west Wales, exploring the local surroundings and going out in all weather to get wet and muddy! But as youngster you spend most of your time at school, and having looked back at my teenage education I can see how various factors led to a fasination in the natural environment and an instinctive draw to mountains. I spent 2 years studying for A’levels, including Geography, at Christ College Brecon, based in the heart of the Brecon Beacons. Now I live in a city and I appreciate the surroundings that I had at school more and more. On Tuesday I went back to school to tell them what I thought about my time there and to discuss the leadership opportunities I took whilst at school. A grounding for Everest? Definitely! The interview will be shown at the forthcoming HMC Conference at the end of this month.
